Under a Void Moon

This week, for #TankaTuesday, I created a double ennead poem. I created this form for carrotranch.com, where we write 99-word flash fiction.

The double ennead has a total of 99 syllables. Each stanza comprises a 6-5-11-6-5 syllable count, written in three stanzas. The three stanzas act as a beginning, a middle, and an end.

My kigo word is: fireflies.

🌑 The Void Moon 🌑

the moonless night seduces
as fireflies dance
darkness dons a black cloak laden with star shine
night birds fly in swift arcs
looking for insects

in the south, a storm brews
a cauldron of clouds
crescendos into a dark swirling expanse
thunder rumbles echo
white lightning explodes

quiet after the storm
crickets croon a hymn
in dedication to the balsamic moon
black sky liminal space
shadows blur the edges

    1. Thanks so much, Suzanne. There are no rules to this form other than syllable count. It gives a poet a lot of room to be creative. You could add end rhymes, etc. It works so well to tell a story poetically. 💕

  13. I finally did manage to see the lightning bugs in my backyard!! Summer is officially here – at least that is what I go by – the ‘blinkers!’

We might get some rain today… …balsamic moon… very nice pairing.
