About A Peril in Ectoplasm: Just Once More (A Medium’s Peril Book 1)

In 1920s Florida, Spiritualism enjoys renewed interest. Daphne Moultrie, the most powerful medium of her time, receives a warning from the other side, “Find her, and keep her with you. Or you will die.” All Daphne knows about this girl is what her crystal ball showed her — a four-leaf clover, and each leaf had a human eye.
.
Meanwhile, Daphne’s fiancé has designs of his own. He pressures her to continue séances for a strange and very demanding woman. With each of those séances, Daphne becomes weaker and closer to death.
.
This novella captures the Roaring Twenties, as only acclaimed author, Teagan Ríordáin Geneviene can. Settings, descriptions, and language all come to vibrant life. The ensemble cast has a number of characters, including one you will love to hate. It’s a genre mash-up, part mystery, part suspense, with a dash of light horror.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

Welcome to the extravagant 1920s where we meet Daphne Moultrie, a spiritualist engaged to a Cuban Count named Crespo Irigoyen. He’s a creepy guy, and I got a real sense that he was only out for a buck. You immediately know something isn’t right about him. He keeps pushing Daphne to hold seances with a woman called Mrs. Smith.

Daphne is a gifted medium. She comes from a wealthy family and lives in a mansion run by her elderly housekeeper, Maisy. The woman has taken care of Daphne since the death of her parents. They have a great relationship, and Maisy is very protective of Daphne. In fact, Maisy suspects the Count is up to no good. She just could be right!

Daphne is exhausted from all of the spiritual communications. A dead soldier appears and issues a stark warning! During a seance, the medium is advised to find a certain person, as her life depends on it!

What a great Halloween read! I enjoyed the characters and the author excels at putting the reader in the middle of the action by her use of terminology and even 1920s slang!

About: A Peril in the Bayou (A Medium’s Peril Book 2)

Rich with atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties and New Orleans, A Peril in the Bayou begins when Clover Flanagan, assistant to renowned psychic medium, Daphne Moultrie, travels with her to New Orleans to see a spiritualist leader. Mother Leafy agrees meet Daphne, but on one condition — Daphne must travel a haunted bayou so she will understand those spirits. However, Leafy has a rival who is a dangerous woman.
.
Despite cryptic warnings from a spirit, they head to New Orleans. In the bayou, Clover’s gifts begin to awaken. So do Voodoo gods in want of a sacrifice, and powerful primeval entities of the swamp, which comes to vicious life.
.
Also on hand from the first book, A Peril in Ectoplasm, are Albert and Phineas in important roles. Housekeeper, Maisy is not entirely left out either. Don’t miss this thrilling romp through 1920s New Orleans, by inimitable author, Teagan Ríordáin Geneviene.

My Recommendation

This second book, A Peril in the Bayou, features Daphne Moultrie, and her secretary, Clover, who also features in the first book.

Daphne is still recovering from her experiences with the dark evil she encountered in the first book. As she recovers, she decides to write a book about the resurgence of spiritualism, which leads her to another spiritualist in New Orleans. Mother Leafy agrees to an interview and Daphne and Clover decide to meet her. Phineas and Albert accompany the ladies.

When strange things start happening on the train, Clover worries about what they are getting themselves into. What transpires will lead them deep into the bayou where voodoo reigns supreme. Can they survive the trip?

This was the perfect Halloween read. I’m so glad I read the two books together. I couldn’t put them down! If you love creepy stories these two books will give you goosebumps! Happy Halloween!

About the Author

Teagan Ríordáin Geneviene is the acclaimed author of the epic high fantasy series, “Dead of Winter.”

Teagan lives in a “high desert” town in the Southwest of the USA. She had always devoured fantasy novels of every type. Then one day there was no new book readily at hand for reading — so she decided to write one. And she hasn’t stopped writing since.

She most often writes in the fantasy genre, but she also writes various types of “punk” and cozy mysteries. Whether it’s a 1920s mystery, a steampunk adventure, or urban fantasy, her stories have a strong element of whimsy. That element is also present in the 14-book “Dead of Winter” series, but the whimsy is presented in a serious way.

Founder of the Three Things method of storytelling, her blog “Teagan’s Books” contains serial stories spontaneously written according to “things” from viewers. http://www.teagansbooks.com Some of those serials have been rewritten into books, like “Hullaba Lulu,” and “Brother Love, a Crossroad,” and the series “Pip’s Three Things.”

Major influences include Roger Zelazny, Agatha Christie, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Robert Jordan, and Charlaine Harris.

    1. You are so kind, Rebecca. Thank you for all of your support. Since you enjoyed Dead of Winter, I think you’ll like these too — although they are quite different from that epic, there’s some of the same kind of vibe. Wishing you and Don a happy Halloween. Hugs on the wing.

  4. Colleen, I’m gobsmacked. What a lovely surprise. I’m delighted that you enjoyed this series. I had not intended to make a series, but when the story for “Bayou” came to me, it demanded these characters. By the end of it, Maisy was whispering about staying in New Orleans for a while, and getting a more important part. So, who knows…
Many thanks for these great reviews. Hugs.

    2. Thank you kindly. For the sake of creepiness, I let the reader assume that the paranormal elements are real, without trying to prove anything. Happy Halloween.

    1. I love the length of the books. I feel like I could write novellas. Teagan’s books are always full of inspiration! This series was perfect for Halloween! 🎃

      1. Thanks for that feedback. For several years, both at my job as a communicator, and in writing blogs, I’ve noticed that most people can’t bear to read anything long. It shocked me in regard to books, because I always loved the biggest, thickest book I could find. For the past few years, I have intentionally kept the length down, where I could. Where I could not, I’ve started dividing the story into book-1 and book-2 more for psychological reasons, since the story is so clearly unfinished. The Delta Pearl will do that when I finish finalizing it, so will my currently running Atonement story. Trying to change with readers.

        1. I really liked how much story you got into your novellas, Teagan. Some books seem to have huge middle sections that are quite boring. I liked the pace of your books. The story never got stale and kept me glued to find out what happened next. Well done. I also like your descriptions and setting. You give me hope for my own writing.
