This week for #TankaTuesday, we’re in the second week of the Japanese season, the beginning of summer. I gave three kigo phrases for the Northern Hemisphere, and for the Southern Hemisphere. We were to write three different forms using each of the kigo phrases. OR… poets could choose the early summer kigo words from the 500 kigo words list.

Here’s the Northern Hemisphere kigo phrase list:

  • #1: “the month of Maying
  • #2: “young leaves”
  • #3: “cooling on the porch”
My red peonies bloomed!
ants tickle the buds
peony blooms come to life
the month of Maying

a moonlit clearing—
willow's young leaves wind dancing
under the aurora

Grandma's stories...
we draw our chairs closer
cooling on the porch

  1. Did you get to see the northern lights? It was cloudy here.

    1. Same for me, we had clouds. We live in the city, so I can’t get away from lights. If we were out in the country, it would make a difference.

Your peonies are beautiful. My reds are in full bloom and the fragrance is dreamy.

    1. My red peonies haven’t opened yet. The ones above are more of a magenta color. They were supposed to be pinker! But, oh well, they have lovely yellow centers and really pop next to our white house. We got the lawn mowed today before the next possible storms roll through. How is your greenhouse working out? I bet all your plants are exploding, E.C. 💖

I’m looking forward to my mums blooming and the Dailias that I planted are coming up too!

    1. I love dailias! They are another of my favorites. Mums are always pretty too. I’m going to plant pink and red geraniums out front because the sun is so hot. They do well in my pots. 🌸

      1. I think I have to move some hostas – that get too much sun… but they are hard to dig up and I have to wait for a good soaking rain.

Cheers to all the flowers that bring us joy!

        1. Yes! I love this time of year… I love all the seasons. Living where we have four seasons makes me appreciate each one!

          1. …Though I think you get a tad more winter 🙂
Much better than when I lived in the midwest which kind of only had summer and winter. I know folks in other all sunshine states say they can reconginze seasonal changes…. but it it isn’t quite the same for me. It is all in what one is used to in their location.

            1. We’re kind of protected here in Mid-Michigan. Many of the bad storms go south of us. We do have more winter. Our spring is short. Today it will be 86 F. That’s hot summer weather. LOL! 😂
