Last of the Cherry Blossoms, tanka

This week for #TankaTuesday we’re in the season of Grain Rain as we follow the 24 Seasons of Japan. The dates are based off of the lunisolar calendar, often called an agricultural calendar. The traditional Chinese and Japanese lunisolar calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms.

I’ve also written this for Frank’s Haikai challenge II #14.

In this tanka, I share the transient nature of the cherry blossoms juxtaposed with the transient nature of our lives. Enjoy the blossoms while you can, they only last a short time. 🌸

  1. Everything changes… We have a relative who due to age and health – and the ill health of the one who used to be her local guardian, has to move closer to the new ‘guardian’… hopefull with better care. But what was once a two hour trip to visit will be four… Might take the train and rent a car, as well as have to stay overnight. *sigh*

    1. My pear blossoms lasted two weeks. With the wind and rain, the blossoms are gone. The upside is green leaves have sprouted.

  10. Beautifully said Colleen…That is the truth of life! ‘Life is like a bubble,’ my scriptures say it clearly yet we never accept it.

    1. Balroop, I think Japanese poetry forces us to look at nature and make those connections to the transient nature of life. It’s all around us and the passing of the seasons reinforces this. Your scriptures are truly wise. 🙏🏻💖
